Install failures on cramped EFI partitions and mysteriously slow internet

May 2026’s Patch Tuesday couldn’t even get itself installed. On devices with 10 MB or less free on the EFI System Partition, the update marched to roughly 35% of the reboot phase, crashed with error 0x800f0922, rolled itself back, and left systems in an inconsistent state — then tried again on the next update cycle. Microsoft confirmed the low-storage cause but initially offered only manual ESP-resizing workarounds, which is not a procedure most people should be anywhere near. A smaller group of users also reported noticeably slower internet after the update installed successfully. The optional update KB5089573, released May 26, finally resolved the install failures. To its credit, KB5089549 also fixed April’s BitLocker lockouts and BITS timeouts — assuming your machine could install it.
