Preview update turns Dell laptops into shutdown-prone space heaters, blocks July security patches

The June 23 preview update shipped a new USB-C Connection Manager interface that turned out to be incompatible with the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver on certain Dell models. Affected machines show a yellow exclamation mark on the driver in Device Manager and suffer unexpected shutdowns, degraded performance, increased heat, and battery drain. The kicker: KB5095093 was itself the fix for June’s Recycle Bin and GIF panel bugs, so this was the cleanup crew starting a new fire. Microsoft’s mitigation was a compatibility hold — affected Dell devices are not offered the July 14 Patch Tuesday update (KB5101650) at all, leaving them exposed to the record 570 vulnerabilities it patches, including actively exploited zero-days, while Microsoft and Dell worked out a fix. That took until July 18, when Microsoft shipped the out-of-band KB5121767 (KB5121768 for hotpatched devices), lifted the hold, and finally let the blocked Dells collect their security updates.
